Discussing the question “What to do?

Answering the question “What to do?” requires a balance between three factors:

⁃ “I want to do”

⁃ “I can do”

⁃ “I need to do”

“I want to do” depends heavily on instinct.

“I can do” demonstrates knowledge.

“I need to do” adds the wisdom of choice.

Usually, we tend to do what we like, and we often like to do what we are good at.

When I was in high school, I played chess very well. I continued to enjoy this hobby during my university years and was quite proud of my skill…

One time, I went to a tournament at a friend’s school. The organizers had two types of matches: rapid chess with 5 minutes per player and slow chess with 2.5 hours per player.

My friend whispered to me, “I know your level, and this school is full of masters. You will lose quickly in rapid chess and slowly in slow chess.”

And that’s exactly what happened. I didn’t even manage to get a draw. So, I got bored and stopped playing chess ever since, which has been over 30 years now.

Last week, I just have a post about travel. A friend whispered. – ”I know your travelling experience already. I have a family acquaintance, wherever you go, they also have been. Even a few times. That family has a 10-year-old child who has traveled to more than 50 countries!”

Go online to find out. That’s right… Maybe, I must give up travel? And look for a job where I ranked first? Can I find it or not?

As humans, whatever we do, there will always be someone who does it better than us. And they may do it much better than us. But we shouldn’t feel inferior and give up.

When we were young, we all did what we wanted to do, and what we thought we were good at.

When we grow up, we gain more knowledge and will choose what we can do.

As adults, there are many times when we have to choose what we need to do, whether we like it or not, regardless of whether we can do it or not.

Someone will always carry with them a notebook – “Things to do”.

And some one else will always carry a notebook – “Things not to do”.

Next part: Talking about knowledge
